Minnesota Hockey Unveils Futures Development Program

The Futures Development Program, provides an opportunity for players to train under a specially designed Minnesota and American Development Model curriculum, with program administration being run through each of the Minnesota Hockey Districts. Registration will be honored on a first-come, first-served basis. If you’re looking for a Spring development opportunity, this program is a perfect fit for you.

There will be a 15U program for 2009 and 2010 birth years, and a 13U program for 2011 and 2012 birth years. The 15U program will run from April 8 - May 26. The 13U program will run from March 25 - May 19. District specific schedules will vary, but will largely operate within those time frames.

The Futures Development Program is designed to provide a fun, constructive and dynamic developmental opportunity for skaters and goalies during the Spring. Player development is the core focus of this program:

  • 13 hours of developmental training
  • A mid-program 3v3 jamboree; teams play 4 cross-ice games (some travel may be required, and the intention is to consolidate each team’s 3v3 events into a single day).
  • End of program festival that will include two 5v5 games for each team (some travel may be required, and the intention is to consolidate each team’s 5v5 events into a single day).
  • A Program uniform – jersey and socks.
  • Player swag.

District 2 Practices will be held at Tartan Arena

The Futures Development Program allows athletes to concurrently participate in other sports during the program’s timeframe. It is strongly encouraged that athletes participate in and prioritize other in-season sports, even if that means missing some designated ice sessions.

Tier 1 Hockey Season Information

Tier I hockey in Minnesota was established in 2015 and included teams at the Youth 16U and 18U and Girls 16U and 19U classifications. Those classifications will continue to be administered by Minnesota Hockey, while operations of the Leagues are overseen by affiliated Leagues including the Girls Midwest Elite League (Girls 16U & 19U), the Upper Midwest High School Elite League (Youth 18U).

In 2016, Minnesota Hockey and the CCM Minnesota Hockey High Performance programs finalized a framework for Tier 1 hockey at the 15 and 14 & Under classifications for Youth and Girls. In keeping with the Tier 1 framework established at the 19U, 18U and 16U levels, all Tier 1 competition in Minnesota will take place in the fall and conclude in time to allow for players to return to their association or high school teams.

In 2018, Minnesota Hockey assumed operations of the Youth Tier I 16U classification and adopted the same framework of the 14U and 15 Youth Leagues for the age group. This allows players the opportunity who have played in the Tier I Leagues as 14 and 15 year olds to have continuity and largely play with many of their same teammates from previous seasons.

Further details regarding registration, tryout dates and competition weekends for each classification are available at the links below.
