Namesake

  • Began as Thomas Field in honor of head coach Frank Thomas
  • Added Sewell 30 years later to recognize former UA baseball standout and head coach Joe Sewell, who spent 14 years with the Cleveland Indians and New York Yankees during his Hall of Fame baseball career

History

  • Home field of the University of Alabama baseball team
  • Opened as Thomas Field on March 26, 1948
  • Renamed Sewell-Thomas Stadium in 1978

  • Underwent major renovations in 1996 and 2001 with a video board being added in 2007

  • Full renovation of The Joe in 2015 created what is now a brand-new stadium for the Crimson Tide

    • Updated baseball-specific weight room along with cardio equipment
    • Air conditioned and LED lit facility that allows for training regardless of weather

Directions to the Facility

From Interstate 20/59 take Exit 73 on Highway 82 East (McFarland Boulevard). Continue on to the University Blvd. exit and turn right on to University Blvd. Continue on University Blvd. and immediately get in the left lane on to Paul W. Bryant Drive. Go past DCH Hospital on the left and into the University of Alabama campus. Sewell-Thomas Stadium is located on the left immediately before the main entrance to the Alabama Athletics Complex and directly across the street from the Bryant Museum.
