Setzler Field

Setzler Field is home to the Newberry College football, field hockey and men's and women's lacrosse programs.

The field was named after Professor Edwin B. Setzler (Class of 1892) on Nov. 4, 1922. It is the oldest on-campus football stadium in the state of South Carolina.

The Indians coached by Frank "Dutch" McLean (Class of 1915) won the first varsity game played on Setzler Field by defeating The Citadel, 10-7. The first game played on the field was a win by the Newberry College junior varsity over Newberry High School, 33-0, on Sept. 16, 1922.

The grass playing surface was replaced in the summer of 2006 with AstroPlay XPN, the same playing surface used by the Indianapolis Colts at the RCA Dome. The turf was replaced again in the summer of 2017, this time with a FieldTurf surface.

The Indians tied the University of South Carolina for the state title in 1924 and were the champions of the Little Four Conference in 1940. Newberry played in the Elks Bowl in 1954 and earned the Little Four championship and a berth in the Palmetto Shrine Bowl in 1955.

Newberry's first championship in football since joining the NCAA in 1991 was earned in 2006. The Indians claimed the South Atlantic Conference championship in 2006 with a conference record of 6-1. Newberry hosted NCAA postseason competition for the first time on Nov. 18, 2006, as the Indians - the third seed in the Southeast Region - defeated sixth-seeded Albany State, 34-28, in the first round. The Indians finished the season 11-2 overall.

Newberry had a 15-game home winning streak spanning the 2006 and 2007 seasons and won 21 of 22 home games from 2006 until midway through the 2009 season. Newberry has won nearly 63 percent of its games (through the 2018 season) at Setzler Field since the turn of the century. Newberry has also downed seven ranked opponents at home since the AFCA Division II poll began in 2000, including wins over No. 6 Carson-Newman (2006) and No. 8 UNC Pembroke (2013).

Newberry went on to playoff appearances in 2013, 2015, and 2016 and won conference titles in 2008 and 2016. The second-seeded Wolves hosted Tuskegee in a first round playoff matchup in 2016, falling 35-33. The previous week saw the Wolves defeat Wingate 27-22 with a 13-point fourth quarter comeback to clinch the SAC title in front of a raucous, over-capacity crowd and a national television audience on American Sports Network.

Newberry's women's lacrosse team began its program in the stadium in spring 2012, while the field hockey squad began in fall 2013 and men's lacrosse played its first game in the spring of 2018.

The Wolves won their first-ever women's lacrosse game over visiting Urbana 11-10. Newberry set a program record with five home wins during the 2014 season. The program's attendance was set in a 2016 loss to Wingate witnessed by 351 fans.

The inaugural field hockey game occurred Sept. 5, 2013, a 7-1 win by Limestone over the Wolves. The program broke the NCAA record for highest-attended regular-season Division II game at the time with a crowd of 665.

Men's lacrosse opened its inaugural season with an 8-6 loss to Roberts Wesleyan in front of a record 250 fans before rattling off a program-best three straight home wins over the next two weeks.
