Downtime at a Tournament? What to Do!
Hey Travelsporters!

Good luck to everyone who is playing at Memorial Day tournaments this weekend. Thank you to all who have served as we remember and honor those who have fallen.

– Team Travelsports

What to do with your downtime during a tournament?

During downtime when traveling to a youth sports tournament, it’s important to keep the team engaged and make the most of the experience.

Here are some suggestions for activities during your teams downtime:

Relaxation and Recreation: Downtime is a great opportunity for relaxation and recreation. Consider activities like swimming, playing games, or simply enjoying some leisure time at the hotel. Some hotels may offer recreational facilities like a pool, gym, or outdoor spaces that can be utilized for team activities.

Sightseeing and Exploration: Take advantage of the opportunity to explore the tournament’s host city or nearby attractions. Visit local landmarks, museums, parks, or other points of interest. It can be both educational and fun for the team.

Team Meetings and Strategy Sessions: Utilize the downtime for team meetings to discuss game strategies, review performances, or plan for upcoming matches. This can be an excellent opportunity for coaches and players to communicate, set goals, and make adjustments.

Volunteer or Community Service: Engage the team in a volunteer or community service activity. Look for local organizations or initiatives that may need assistance. It not only provides a valuable learning experience but also promotes a sense of giving back.

Cultural and Educational Activities: Research the local culture and history of the tournament’s location. Plan visits to cultural centers, historical sites, or museums that can provide insights into the local heritage. It can be an educational experience for the team.

Team Dinners or Social Events: Arrange team dinners or social events during downtime. This can be a fun way to celebrate accomplishments, build team spirit, and enjoy local cuisine together. Look for nearby restaurants or consider organizing a potluck or BBQ at a suitable location.

Rest and Recovery: Downtime is also essential for rest and recovery, especially for young athletes. Make sure to prioritize downtime for relaxation, proper sleep, and rejuvenation. Encourage team members to take care of their physical and mental well-being.

Group Activities and Games: Plan group activities or games that promote interaction and fun. This could include card games, board games, team challenges, or outdoor activities like a scavenger hunt. Engaging in recreational activities can boost team morale and create lasting memories.

Watch Other Matches: If there are other games happening during the tournament, consider watching matches of other teams. This can provide an opportunity to observe different playing styles, strategies, and learn from other athletes’ performances.

Remember to balance downtime activities with the tournament schedule and the need for rest. It’s important to create a mix of fun, relaxation, team-building, and preparation to make the most of the overall experience.

Finding the Right Hotel For Your Team

Traveling with a sports team can be an exciting and challenging experience, especially when it comes to finding the perfect hotel, assuming you and your team have a choice! Choosing the right hotel is crucial for the success and comfort of your team, as it can affect their performance and overall experience. Here are some tips on how to find the perfect hotel for your traveling sports team:

  1. Location: The location of the hotel is essential for a sports team. Look for a hotel that is close to the venue where you’ll be playing or practicing or if you are playing at multiple facilities, try and find one in the middle. It’s also essential to choose a hotel that is close to restaurants, grocery stores, and other amenities.

  2. Room Amenities: The rooms should be spacious enough to accommodate your team, and should also have enough storage space for their gear. Look for a hotel that offers amenities like refrigerators, microaves, and coffee makers in the rooms.

  3. Recreation Facilities: If your team has some downtime between games, look for a hotel that has recreation facilities like a pool or a gym.

The Development and Progression of Baseball

Baseball requires a unique combination of physical, technical, and strategic skills. To become a successful baseball player, it is essential to develop these skills through regular practice, training, and game simulations.

Physical Skills

One of the most important aspects of baseball is physical fitness. Players need to have excellent speed, agility, endurance, and strength to be successful on the field. The Role of Parents and Coaches in Youth Sports – Ways to Provide Support

Parents play an important role in the development of their kid’s athletic career. Parents are kids’ main mentors on and off the playing field. Their influence helps with an athlete’s skill development, emotional support and helping them cope with winning and losing. There are a number of strategies parents can use to help their kids have a successful athletic career.

According to Believe Perform, parents can help encourage their kids to develop self-awareness of the skills they’ve learned. This can be done by supporting them and showing support throughout practice and competitions and asking them how it went afterwards. As a parent, it’s important to give coaches autonomy and put trust in their methods. As long as the coaches’ and parents’ messages are aligned,  it will lead to less confusion for the athlete. Additionally, it’s important to provide emotional support whenever your child has a tough match or loss.

Though providing support is essential, it can sometimes be too much. Becoming over-involved could cause stress and increase burnout rates at a young age. To prevent burnout, it’s important to not put too much pressure on winning and success, but encouraging the athlete to do their very best. The importance is that they should always enjoy their sport and additional pressure could cause a decrease in their performance. If you disagree with a coach, it’s important to prevent giving conflicting advice, but to talk with the coach another time so it does not come across as being disrespectful.

The Importance of Proper Nutrition and Hydration for Young Athletes

Young athletes train for hours every week for their sport. To increase their skills, proper nutrition and hydration are an important part of their development. Having well-balanced meals before practice or a competition is important to help athletes do their best. It’s easy to forget because of the daily stress of school and that’s why it’s important to have great organizational skills and an established daily routine to pack snacks and a healthy lunch. According to Nationwide Children’s hospital, a healthy diet helps with injury prevention, strengthens the immune system, decreases muscle tiredness and soreness, muscle healing, increased energy levels and attention span. Before a practice or competition, it’s important to have a well-balanced meal 3-4 hours before and a snack 30-60 minutes before to give yourself an extra energy boost.

Some examples of healthy meals include:

  • Breakfast: scrambled eggs with feta and spinach and whole grain toast with avocado
  • Lunch: brown rice or quinoa with healthy proteins (chicken or salmon), avocado, sweet potato and a small salad
  • Dinner: whole wheat pasta with tomato sauce, chicken and vegetables

Some examples of healthy snacks include:

  • Dried fruit and granola bar
  • Fruit (apples, bananas or strawberries) with peanut butter
  • Yogurt with granola
  • Turkey sandwich with avocado and tomato on whole grain bread

Athletes are told to stretch after, but what some forget is that you should refuel and hydrate after your workout/practice/competition. Athletes should have a snack 15 minutes to an hour after and a meal 1-2 hours after. This is important because athletes replace lost nutrients. It’s also important to hydrate including drinking 64-80 ounces of water, 4-6 ounces of fresh juice with no added sugar or 2-3 glasses of milk per day.

Tips for Preventing Sports Injuries

Injuries are common in youth sports and with practices becoming more rigorous and intense, kids are opting to participate in their sport year-round, but it increases the chances of injuries without proper rest, nutrition and injury prevention. According to Johns Hopkins Medicine, some causes of sports injuries include improper training practices and improper warm-up or stretching practices. Here are three thoughts athletes should consider.

Why is stretching so important? According to the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, maintaining flexibility is important because cold muscles are more prone to injury and it’s important to get your blood circulation flowing before a big event. Stretching can improve the ability of muscles to contract and perform. Using proper technique when training is so important because it helps protect you from injury. Each stretch should start out slowly, should not be painful and be held for at least 20 seconds. It’s important to take your time and go through the full range of motion. Whether it’s lunges, butt kicks, arm circles or running laps, warm-up techniques are essential.

Proper technique leads to less injuries. Some common injuries from athletes include sprains, fractures, joint and muscle injuries. When training, it’s less about quantity and more about quality. Using proper technique is essential to playing your best and preventing injuries. Make sure you’re playing with the proper equipment, balance your body weight to prevent one side from being stronger than the other and use proper footwork. As an athletes, always remember to ask your coach for feedback, be receptive to that feedback and prevent groupthink.

Finally, it’s important for athletes to take time and rest from their practice or competition. Muscles can be overused and remember to stretch, hydrate to prevent any dehydration or heat exhaustion and eat within 15-60 mins after finishing to prevent any loss of nutrients. If you’re injured, it’s important to rest and not rush. Make sure that you leave yourself an adequate time to heal from previous injury. Be sure to have your injury checked out by your doctor or physical therapist. Be sure that you’re clear to practice or play by your doctor to prevent getting re-injured.

Sports Academies

For teenagers with Olympic or NCAA athletic dreams, a growing breed of sports-focused high schools are offering the flexibility to place major emphasis on physical training and practice while continuing to pursue academics. These facilities, often called sports academies, differ substantially, with some offering higher quality academics than others, says Karen Gross, a former college president and parent to a ski academy graduate. They include boarding schools that integrate training into the daily routine; day schools that focus on sports; hybrid schools that blend physical and digital education; and online-only platforms.

IMG Academy, a top academy in Florida, is the world’s leading sports education brand that provides top level training and education for student-athletes. With a 600-acre campus, IMG has more than 1,200 student-athletes in grades 6-12 and post-graduates from 49 U.S. states and more than 60 countries. Between 2018 and 2020, 44% of IMG students went to a university with NCAA Division I athletics, Pernetti says, and 92% overall attended college. IMG says it has produced more NFL players on 2021 kickoff weekend rosters than any other U.S. high school.

For our newest issue, we are rolling a new section dedicated to cause-based sports events. At Travelsports, we want to highlight those events that are dedicated to raising awareness and donations for non-profit causes. Whether they are important to your local community or are global in nature, highlighting these events will become a part of what we do. Please see our Events for Cause section to learn more about how we can highlight your event.

Fitness

When a young athlete takes an interest in a sport, parents are eager to rapidly build up their development. According to Memorial Hermann, strength and conditioning is important to help improve agility, motor control and overall ability to perform. It’s important for young athletes to receive proper instruction from those who understand technique and proper form. It’s important for coaches and training staff to create proper training regimens to prevent any burnout or injury. Here are some important exercises to help increase muscle mass.
  • Push-ups
  • Suspension training – pull-ups with TRX
  • Step ups
  • Lunges and squats – with or without weights

Hockey Players Turning to Figure Skating Training

There is more to hockey then having the ability to score from the hashmarks like Auston Matthews or go to one-on-five like Connor McDavid. Possessing advanced skating techniques is a big advantage when it come to playing hockey.

Now, teams and players from house league all the way up to NHL are building these skills through figure skating techniques taught by former figure skaters.

Sled Hockey Charity Event – New Trier vs. Shirley Ryan AbilityLab Blackhawks

Chicago-Area New Trier High School Hockey hosted a fundraising event to benefit the 4 time NHL Sled Hockey Champions, the AbilityLab Blackhawks, and beloved New Trier senior Clay Scherb, brother of Cole, a New Trier hockey player.

Clay experienced a life-changing spinal cord injury in August, which necessitates intense rehabilitation. His care is being provided by the amazing team at Shirley Ryan. His condition is requiring extraordinary expenses for medical care, equipment, home modifications and lifestyle changes.

All proceeds from the game went to the Scherb family during this extremely difficult time and the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab’s Adaptive Sports Program, which offers over 20 different sports and fitness programs to youth and adults with physical disabilities. All equipment, facilities and coaching are donation based so there is no cost to the athlete.

They are still accepting donations! Click the image below to make a donation.
